Plenty of Options for “The Great American Race”
Posted By Diego | NBA News | January 6, 2012, 03:54 AM |
With the popularity of NASCAR exploding over the past decade it would only make sense that Daytona 500 betting has expanded far beyond what it used to be as there are a plethora of options available for the biggest stock car race of the year.
Daytona betting options include picking the individual winner of the race, matchups of different drivers, teams, and manufacturers, and prop bets that are fascinating for their detail as well as selection. The Daytona 500 is among the most challenging events to try and figure out on the annual sports calendar each year as NASCAR takes NFL style parity to an entirely new level. The Daytona 500 is not at all about the best driver or car since restrictor plates are used on the cars in order to slow them down. The plates have the effect of keeping the cars at near identical speeds and running in breathtaking packs of 3 or 4 cars wide as the cars are just inches apart from each other. The drivers end up picking drafting partners that push each other through aerodynamics as cars without drafting partners end up getting blown away by the rest of the field due to their lack of a push.
With that in mind it may seem at first glance that the Daytona 500 is a lottery or roulette wheel but a closer look reveals that is not at all the case. The best drivers long ago decided to step it up and develop restrictor plate programs that would give them a competitive advantage.
The greatest example of this would be the late Dale Earnhardt, who was known as an old school gutty racer that would hate plate racing since it was not about the best car or driver. But instead of whining about how plate racing worked, Earnhardt instead developed a dominant program that made him the man to beat both at Daytona and at the other NASCAR plate track in Talladega. Soon, the old dirt track racer became a sophisticated plate racing champion that earned his greatest wins in the most difficult circumstances.
Earnhardt’s son Dale Jr. remains one of the best plate racers on the circuit and is always a favorite at Daytona 500 racing time. Another driver to consider is Tony Stewart who has yet to find luck at the Daytona 500 and is looking for the one big race that has eluded him in his career.
